Here’s a great example.  Simply by looking at the pay scale of a video poker machine, you will be able to pick out a machine that provides a better payback to you, the player.  It’s true, just by looking at the machine. Please note that  this does not necessarily mean that you will win.  After all is is gambling. Empowered with the knowledge though why would you play a video poker machine that offers a lower return to the player when you can easily locate on that offers a higher one?  I will provide details about finding the best machines and what to look for and I will even show you some fantastic resources that do all of the work for you.

Tip #1

If you are not familiar with poker hands, take a little time to educate yourself.

Here is some basic information on how to play.

Video Poker is based on the game of draw poker with the main difference is that you are not playing against other players. It’s you and the video poker machine. There are many types of video poker machines so we will focus on the basics. After inserting you money, the machine deals five cards on the screen. The player then has the option of of keeping any or all of the cards or drawing up to five new cards. You keep the cards you want to keep by selecting the “hold” button which is located underneath the card you want to keep. After you have made your selection as to what cards to keep you hit the “deal” button and the discarded cards will be replaced by new cards. Your win or loss is determined by the outcome after you push the draw button. How much you win is based on the pay table that is posted on the front of the machine.

Tip #2

Do a little research as to where the “best” machines are located.

Remember I told you that you could pick out the more favorable video poker machines simply by looking at the pay table? It’s true.

Since this site is for recreation, you may not want to put that much time and effort in to learning that so here is a super easy alternative.  Visit the VPFree2 site.  Scroll through the list of Casinos where you wish to play and you will find a comprehensive list of the video poker machine broken down by casino.  Scrolling through the list, you can find the best machines and the site even lists the location of the machines.  It is by far, the easiest way to find highest payback machines.

Tip #3

Always play the maximum number coins.

Generally, you can play 1 to 5 coins per hand.  It is best for you to play the maximum number of coins.  Here is an example.  Let’s say you are playing a $1 video poker machine.  Each hand you play at the maximum coin level will cost you $5.  If you hit a royal flush you win 4,000 coins which is $4,000.  Let’s say you were losing and  played two coins ($2) instead of the maximum of 5.  The royal flush payout would be 500 coins or $500.  If you would have played quarters, the maximum bet would be $1.25 (.25 x 5) and your payout would have been 4,000 coins or $1,000.

Tip #4

Set a recreational budget and stick to it.

I cannot tell you how many times I see people win a lot of money and then lose it all.  Once while working in an upscale Las Vegas Strip Casino, I paid a woman $20,000 for winning a Royal Flush on a $5 video poker machine. This woman was not a high roller.  In fact, she had a very lucky day.  She had won $1,000 on a quarter video poker machine and then she decided to play dollars.  Amazingly, she hit another royal for $4,oo0.  She was so excited and then she moved up to $5.  While I agree with moving up in denomination if you are winning this lady got so in the moment that after winning $20,000….yes $20,000 she continued to gamble and lost it all.  Reading this you are probably saying to yourself, “Oh that would never happen to me” but believe me I have seen it happen.

Tip #5

Have fun!

I am a true believer that a happy, healthy outlook provides an environment more conducive to winning.
