How the Energizer AP1000 rejuvenated my iPhone 3GS battery

December 23rd, 20111 Comment »

Last year during the Black Friday sales, I purchased the Energizer AP1000 extended battery pack with a built-in case. I threw it in the drawer and promptly forgot about it. A few months ago my iPhone 3GS was not holding a charge too well.  I used an application called Battery Detective to find out how much battery life was left and determined that it was at 1023 mAh out of 1200 mAh.  That means my iPhone 3GS was at about 80% of its original battery capacity. Since my phone is jailbroken and unlocked, I wanted to avoid a battery replacement.

I decided to use the extended battery so that my iPhone 3GS would be usable for an entire day.  To my surprise, after using it 3 or 4 times, my iPhone 3GS is now at 1183 mAh out of 1200 mAh .  Simply amazing!  A rechargeable lithium-ion battery is not supposed to be able to repair itself.  Perhaps there was a voltage problem with my charger, however it’s an Apple original.

I now go two days on average without a charge and am very pleased.  I use it regularly for battery draining tasks such as watching movies or listening to music for extended periods.  There are, what I consider, two minor downsides.  One is that other cases won’t fit over it therefore the top of the iPhone 3GS is exposed and the second is that the case is kind of flimsy.  I read other complaints about the case cracking and after close inspection noticed there are a few cracks.  If you can live with that, it’s an amazing product.  Energizer AP 1000
